Playing Tips
Stoke index 1, the hardest hole on the golf course. The 16th begins the final three holes back along the ocean towards the clubhouse. The tee box is a setting like no other, you can really feel how close the rocks and the ocean are. With a short carry over a wasteland, the tee shot glares into a punitive tiered fairway. There is a large bunker on the left-hand side, which is reachable from the tee, and a rocky coastline down the right. After four holes of a consistent left-hand turn, we are seeing it head the other way now. The ideal position to hit your approach shot into this green would be from the middle or top tier, which requires an accurate tee shot to avoid funnelling down toward rough on the lower tier. Missing your drive to the right is no fun at all, as you either end in the water or the rough alongside the coast.
If you think the tricky part is over, you are sadly mistaken. Having one of the smaller greens on the course and trouble surrounding means you must hit a pretty accurate shot into this green. The fairway approaching the green feels like a strip of carpet when looking from above, narrowing dramatically as it nears the putting surface; one of the many reasons this hole justifies its stroke index 1 title. The course designers also decided to further complicated things by adding a pot bunker around 15 metres short of the green, directly in the middle of the small strip of fairway. A low shot that avoids the bunker to the left is ideal here, and should kick onto the green. Too far left, however, and you are faced with a rough-covered mound that sometimes kicks balls onto the green but sometimes holds balls and leaves a difficult chip. Whatever happens here, enjoy the setting as the scenery is breathtaking.
Pro’s Tip: Aiming to the left off the tee is a wise decision to give yourself the best chance to stay on the top tier of the fairway. Staying on the top tier will give you the best view, and an easier angle for your approach shot. From the tee box you will see a red and white barbers pole in the distance – Use this as a guide as it will give you the best chance to find the fairway and leave yourself a spectacular, and manageable, approach shot.
